Three Days in Iceland ~ #MyStopOver in Iceland

I’m just going to say with complete honesty that Iceland was the absolute coolest place I have ever been.  There are not may places in the world that have not been taken over by tourism, but Iceland is one of them.  It is certainly getting there, and we were fortunately visiting in the off-season (November), but it felt so undamaged, unscathed, and pure compared to any travel destination I have ever visited.  The cultural richness and interesting traditions, food, and history made the place so intriguing.  I must say I am not typically a walking tour attending adventurer – history lessons often end in me mentally flatlining – but I was all ears in this one!  Here are some of the interesting facts I learned on the tour:

1. Iceland is one of the most gender neutral countries in the world, with both the first democratically elected female and openly gay Prime Ministers.

2. There is no such thing as McDonald’s in Iceland (talk about something to celebrate …)

3.  They eat some interesting delicacies – whale, shark, puffins, and ponies.  A tid-bit of advice from me to you – if ever feel the need to try shark meat, smell it first!  We were somewhat ambushed with shark meat and I cannot remember the last time the smell of a food stung my nostrils so terribly.

4. There is virtually no violent crime in Iceland … ever.

5. Almost half of the country believes in Elves.  In 2013, the construction of a highway was stopped because it’s intrusion on Elf habitat would have been too obtrusive.

IN CONCLUSION  – have you ever the opportunity to fly Iceland Air home, consider taking advantage of the #MyStopOver program Iceland Air offers for flyers to stay for up to one week to visit this fantastic country and its unexplored (even sacred) land.  It is only going to grow crazier with incoming tourism from here on out, so maybe … now?  Thanks Icelandic Air for #MyStopOver!
